90년대 초등학생이었던 사람들은 누구나 기억할 만화 영화 베르사유의 장의 덕분에 마리앙투와네뜨는 잘은 몰라도 이름 정도는 많이 들었던 기억이 난다. 하지만 이 책을 통해서 프랑스 혁명, 그룹 Cold Play의 Viva la vida 라는 노래, 루이 16세, 무시무시한 단두대 이런 것들을 하나로 연결 시킬 수 있었다. 사실 프랑스 대혁명을 주제로 한 예술 작품은 무수히 많다. 레미제라블도 갑자기 생각이 난다. 하지만, 대부분 성난 민중들의 시점에서 자유, 평등, 박애를 외치는 모습이내 개인적으로는 대부분이었던것 같다. 하지만, 이 책은 물론 아이들이 보는 책이지만, 오스트리아 제국 공주였던 마리앙투와네뜨의 생애와 프랑스의 왕비가 된 배경, 궁중에서의 생활이 잘 묘사되어 있다. 가장 고통 없이 사람을 죽인다고 알려져 있는 단두대 이지만그래도 단두대의 이슬이 된 루이 16세와 마리앙투와네뜨의 모습에선 연민이 느껴질 정도였다.

And after much public outcry, in 1793 she quite literally lost her head because of it. Whether she was blameless or guilty is debatable, but Marie Antoinette remains woven into the fabric of history and popular culture.
